Exquisitely designed by Shiraj, a renowned architect, the restaurant features four different divisions that can accommodate around 140 people at any given time. The interiors of the restaurant incorporate a unique combination of subtle elegance and sumptuous luxury deeply influenced by the northwest frontier provinces.
The dim lit surroundings, rough stony floorings and walls, aesthetically designed low-seating tables and wooden chairs offer valid insights in to the glory of the Afghan era. To add to the ethnicity of the restaurant, a portion of the roof is tastefully adorned with decorative shiny objects giving it a sparkling blue sky look, whilst the rugged walls are adorned with classy paintings and ethnic paraphernalia, making it an ideal place to sit, relax and unwind after a hard day's work.
Further accentuating the finesse of interiors are the flame-like torches mounted on the walls giving it rather a romantic look. Warm lights and soothing earthy tones define the ambience, whilst the attentive waiters adorn black warrior-like dresses and fancy headgear reminiscent of Genghis Kahn to complete the faux-medieval feel.
Being a theme based restaurant; the Samarkand Restaurant Bangalore offers a wide variety of rare Afghani and Peshawari delicacies, further complemented by exotic tandoors, kebabs and other cuisines from the Central Asian regions. Look out for the unique menu, which comes in the form of a newspaper, the Samarkand Express, whilst the wine list takes the shape of a wine bottle.
Diners are served a complimentary basket full of flour sticks with an assortment of chutneys and mayonnaise sauce whilst deciding on their meals. The menu is very limited for any regular restaurant of this kind but the choices on offer are of the highest quality. Begin with a Tandoori Chooza Sabut, which is perfectly marinated and roasted at slow fire, and is simply awesome. Other starters include the Lucknowi Galawati Kebab, the best in Bangalore, and fresh and very tastefully done paneer. For the main course do not miss the mutton briyani which is highly rated, whilst the kebabs are skewered to perfection.
The restaurant also features a few vegetarian dishes, including the rotis, which are supremely baked. The other mouth-watering dishes include an assortment of curries, garlic butter naan and sabji. Finally, for desserts, do not miss out on the choice of kulfi served with rabri and faluda, which is tremendous.
The restaurant offers a variety of drinks, including an exciting range of cocktails and mocktails, whilst the service is professional and prompt. And just remember; don't ask for any cutlery, it is recommended that you eat your food in the traditional manner of the region, with your hands. Do not be perturbed though, as the food is absolutely extraordinary in preparation, presentation and taste, a true delight to every true food connoisseur.
The restaurant is open daily from 12pm to 3.30 p.m. for lunch, and from 7pm to 11.30 p.m. for dinner, and is the perfect venue to relax amidst calming Nusrat and other Sufi music. Be sure to book in advance though, as it is one of the premier eateries in the city, which often plays host to many well known personalities, and is always in demand.
Prices may appear slightly on the higher side, but with such good food, an excellent ambiance and efficient service, it is worth the experience every time. A meal for two is likely to cost in the region 1500 rupees or $50; most definitely money well spent.
