One of the older establishments in the town, the restaurant was started in the 50s, and was once the caterers to Presidents and Prime ministers, which explains the trendy crowd that it attracts. Koshy's Restaurant Bangalore makes your feel sophisticated, sitting among middle aged women puffing away on a cigarette and downing mugs of beer while reading a novel.
It is the right place to spend a couple of hours at lunch, they don't just encourage it, they actually expect you to do so. Situated on St. Marks Road Bangalore, the restaurant has stood the test of time, and has become the premier rendezvous for stolen moments, nostalgic recalls, conferences, and eager tourists amidst fine fare and a relaxing ambiance.

Started in the 1940 as a bakery outlet, it gave place in 1952-53 to the Parade Café, where seasoned and budding politicians, journalists, professors, lawyers, business men and romancing couples holding hands had their snacks and coffee/Tea, lunch or dinner in the inviting atmosphere. 50 years of glorious service and the patronage doesn't seem to be waning as the restaurant was added 6 years ago, thereby segregating those who have a fondness for their tobacco from those who do not.
Definitive to Bangalore culture, probably even the cornerstone of it, it is where people come together to catch up, talk shop, brainstorm on a script or interpret the fine print of law. The extensive menu and delicious food only add up to what is perhaps an unadulterated Bangalore experience.
The old world charm of the wood panels, sturdy chairs, and the line drawings of Bangalore of yore blends unobtrusively with the zany granite pillars and colourful table cloths, thereby creating a warm and unique environment in which to enjoy your dining experience. Koshy's smoking section is where the action is - it's on the left as you enter in the smoking section, there are a few old portraits scattered on the wall, with fluorescent lights and indifferent fans on the ceiling.
At the tables, businessmen, journalists and others argue and make their deals over tea, butter chicken, fresh lime sodas, and Kingfishers. The restaurant owner is Mr. Prem Koshy, a third generation restaurateur. Very articulate, his stints abroad have helped in bringing the freshness and innovativeness of the new generation in management and working on the goodwill of the earlier generations ensuring that the restaurant is a happening place.
The speciality about this place is that one can order a cup of tea and linger over it for an hour, and yet not be hustled. If a meeting venue is required with an out of town visitor, Koshy's often seems to be the choice. There are quite a few food innovations, thanks to Prem Koshy, himself a theatre person and a foodie. In terms of the food, the combo of rice and dhal with stir fried aloo gobi is highly recommended. Each vegetable is juicy and well cooked through. Gleaming oil gives it a wacky taste that perfectly compliments the plain dhal.
Likewise, the spinach bake is sensational. Made with a white sauce and cheese, it is sure to delight the taste buds. The pork fry cooked Malabar style is a nice dry dish that proves a fitting accompaniment to the rice and dhal. The fish fry is a delightful fillet of fresh sear fish, well laminated, whilst the tandoori chicken kebabs consist of juicy chunks of chicken superbly prepared and absolutely delicious.
Perfect to round off a well thought meal is the chocolate mousse. Wickedly inviting, the dark brown and light dessert is the signature dessert item at Koshy's Restaurant Bangalore. Their baked goods like their whole-wheat bread, plum cake, sweet and salt biscuits are equally good, and you will want to take some home with you. Vegetarians too have plenty of choice with favourites such as malai kofta, navratan korma, and cream palak to name a few.
Many make a beeline to this place on Sunday mornings for the stew and appam, which is simply extraordinary and a true culinary delight. Mr. Koshy also often comes up with new dishes such as a variety of Korean food. And although the menu has remained similar since the establishment of the eatery, the dishes themselves have evolved over time in response to the preference of the customers.
The menu has a footnote: "All dishes are prepared fresh to order, requires 25 to 39 minutes' time." This clearly indicates there is no hurrying here; relax, take your time and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. |
With over 891 dishes coming out of the kitchen, Koshy's Restaurant Bangalore offers something for everyone. The restaurant has become an institution in Bangalore such is its popularity amongst the locals, which include lawyers, theatre people, ministers and other professionals.
It offers a relaxing ambiance where you are left to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed. The food is absolutely delicious, the coffee brilliant and the desserts are to die for. So for a complete dining experience in an unmatched environment, be sure to visit this unique eatery. |
